A guide to El Bierzo from Carracedelo

A short selection of real places in the region, just as we'd recommend them to a guest. We don't include distances or travel times: each visit depends on the mode of transport and the route taken.

Places in the region

Monasterio de Santa María de Carracedo

Located within the municipality of Carracedelo itself. It's a medieval monastic complex, open to visitors today, and the closest heritage landmark to TA-BI.

Ponferrada

The region's capital. The Templar Castle and the old town make up most of the visit; it's also where the Camino Francés enters El Bierzo.

Villafranca del Bierzo

A historic town on the Camino, known for the Iglesia de Santiago and its Puerta del Perdón. It's the next stage for many pilgrims passing through Carracedelo.

Las Médulas

A former Roman gold mine, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A landscape of reddish crags and chestnut trees, with viewpoints and marked trails.

Cacabelos

A wine-growing town in El Bierzo, on the Camino route. A good spot to explore wineries of the Denominación de Origen Bierzo and its mencía grape.

Valle del Silencio and Peñalba de Santiago

A mountain valley in the Montes Aquilianos with Peñalba de Santiago, a historic complex of traditional architecture and a Mozarabic church.

Lago de Carucedo and Sierra de los Ancares

Two natural landscapes of the region: Lago de Carucedo, linked to Roman mining activity, and the Sierra de los Ancares, all mountains and forest.

The Camino de Santiago through El Bierzo

The Camino Francés crosses the region and passes through Carracedelo before continuing on to Villafranca del Bierzo. It's a stretch of valley, vineyard and village, quite different from the mountain climb that follows.
